Soon after the bill to tackle climate change was rejected by a regional council in Venice, the Veneto council hall was flooded because of the high tides.
This is the first time in 50 years that the Italian city has been severely flooded.
According to The Gaurdian, when the climate change bill was being debated by the councilors Venice experienced its worst flooding since 1966. And after regional council’s majority rightwing parties; the League, Brothers of Italy and Forza Italia, rejected the amendments suggested by the centre-left Democratic party the room got flooded a few minutes later.
A Facebook post by Andrea Zanoni, the Democratic party’s deputy chairman of the council’s environment committee, the room got flooded just two minutes after the bill was rejected.
Zanoni also shared pictures of the flooded room in his post, he wrote, “Ironically, the chamber was flooded two minutes after the majority parties rejected our proposals to tackle climate change.”
He further added in his post “There is no more meaningful image than a chamber being flooded, causing the representatives of the Venetian people to flee, to illustrate all the inconsistency and political nullity of a current miserable administrative led by the League, Brothers of Italy and Forza Italia.”
The amendments that were rejected by the council asked for funding for renewable energy sources, replacement of diesel buses with more efficient and less polluting options, scrapping of stoves and reducing the impact of plastic.
