The Ukkadam solar power plant reportedly generated about 3 lakh units of electricity and helped the city corporation save around Rs 16 lakh on its electricity bills. The solar power plant was commissioned couple of months back.
A corporation official speaking to ET said “While 1.46 lakh units of power were generated in February, another 1.5 lakh units were generated in March. The cost of power is Rs 5.60 per unit. The power produced in the plant is used to offset the electricity bill of a water pumping station at Velliangadu.”
The solar power plant commissioned at the cost of Rs 5.5 crore using 3,168 panels, each with a capacity of 320 watts and generates an average of 4,500 units per day.
According to the report the corporation has started the installation work of another solar power plant on 15 acres of land close to one at Ukkadam and plans to complete it in four months. This solar plant is expected to generate 5.9kW units of power per hour.
It took some time for the corporation to connect the first solar power plant to a TANGEDCO sub-station as it involved shutting down power in some areas. The corporation has already gained a NOC for the second solar power plant from TANGEDCO to transmit the power generated from the plant. Now they just need to connect the new plant with the existing one to transmit power.
The publication notes that beside the two plants the, another solar power plant with a capacity of 1 MW is under construction at Kavundampalayam and it is expected to be completed in a month time.
Once all the three plants are connected the corporation is expected to save Rs 5 crore, it has been paying about Rs 20 crore per annum on its electricity bills.
